A fifteen-minute drive from Jowhar’s city center, along a road flanked by lush, overflowing rice fields, lies Bananeey—a close-knit community of dedicated farmers. Their livelihoods are deeply tied to the land they cultivate and the life-giving canals that channel water from the mighty Shabelle River. The warmth of their welcome was matched only by their natural caution. But with their consent and a touch of humor to ease the atmosphere, they soon forgot about my presence, allowing me to capture a few candid moments of their discussions.
